The Department of Computing Science at the University of Oldenburg meanwhile looks back on more than 35 years of education in all areas of computer and computing science. Oldenburg's internationally renowned energy research - not only in the field of energy informatics - has a history of more than 30 years, which is characterized by an interdisciplinary exchange with other university locations in Lower Saxony, Germany, and abroad and various scientific centers. The work in the subject area of "Intelligent Energy Systems" at the University of Oldenburg is among the top group. This is reflected, for example, in the management of large interdisciplinary joint research projects, the management of the specialist group "Energy Informatics" of the Gesellschaft für Informatik (German Informatics Society) or the founding from the German side of the DACH+ leading conference "Energy Informatics". Energy informatics in Oldenburg is currently the largest national research group in this field with international networking, for example through the associated partnership in the Joint Programme "Smart Grids" of the European Energy Research Alliance or the ACM Special Emerging Interest Group on Energy Systems and Informatics "ACM SIGEIG-Energy" established in 2018. To this end, the department cooperates closely with other subjects at the university, for example, medicine and psychology, as well as economics and social sciences in particular. In addition to numerous IT companies, this includes in particular the affiliated OFFIS Institute for Computer Science, one of the most important non-university computer science research institutions in Germany, and the newly established branch of the German Research Centre for Artificial Intelligence. In the research laboratories for networked energy systems, maritime systems, assisted and automated driving, future care and health systems as well as for smart city structures, which are jointly operated by the university and the OFFIS Institute for Computer Science, we work together on innovative solutions for socially relevant issues of the future. If you are interested in studying at a renowned German University of Applied Sciences, you have come to the right place. We offer you various Bachelor and Master modules in English as part of an exchange semester and a fully English-language program with a master's program in IT Engineering. During a semester abroad you will not only develop professionally, but also personally: you will become more independent, tolerant, intercultural, and socially competent. You will also improve your communication skills and learn a new language.

The Fachhochschule Wedel University of Applied Sciences is a well-known private university with approximately 1.100 enrolled students. Our institution is located in the Hamburg Metropolitan Area in Northern Germany. We steadily adopt current developments in the economy and integrate these new standards into the curriculum. This guarantees the excellent quality of our academic programs, which in turn helps our graduates find jobs easily. 90% of our bachelor graduates have already signed a job contract by the time they finish their studies.

FH Wedel University of Applied Sciences maintains close connections to multinational companies. Co-operations are established via internships, theses, and joint development projects. Following their graduation, our students are often employed by the companies in which students have already done internships or their theses.

FH Wedel currently offers eleven bachelor's programs and six master's programs. Currently, these pages are only available in German. Except for the master's program IT Engineering, which is conducted entirely in English, all of our programs require academic-level proficiency in German.

History

A precursor to today’s University of Applied Sciences, the PTL was founded in 1948. Soon, the institution grew in size as well in terms of the degree programs offered and moved to Wedel in 1963. Following the introduction of the first informatics classes as early as 1968, the Fachhochschule Wedel was set up to co-exist alongside the PTL, offering a higher education.

First international co-operations were initiated in the mid-1990s. In 2004, the FH changed its degree programs to the Bachelor/Master system now common throughout Europe. Meanwhile, the selection of courses offered continues to adapt to the changing demands of society and the economy, for instance by introducing the programs E-Commerce in 2011, IT-Engineering in 2015, Smart Technology and Management, and Consulting & Auditing in 2016.

In a networked world in which all types of information sources are often just a click away, pure theory teaching at university is no longer up-to-date. Interdisciplinary teamwork

The selected project ideas are worked on by interdisciplinary teams made up of students from the three degree programs Software Engineering, Digital Design & Innovation, and Business Management & Entrepreneurship. These three disciplines reflect the competencies required to develop successful digital products in practice. Working in a team allows students to improve their communication and collaboration skills and develop important leadership skills. In this learning environment, innovative projects for the world of tomorrow emerge from the diversity of ideas and productive collaboration among students.

Real projects

The first semester offers students the opportunity to arrive at CODE and orient themselves. It helps them understand the learning concept and prepare for the upcoming core semesters. At the beginning of each core semester, students, teachers, and partner companies pitch their project ideas with which they want to develop digital solutions for real problems. From this broad spectrum, the students then choose a project that arouses their interest and curiosity and fits their learning goals to implement it in a team with other students during the semester. In some ways, studying at CODE is like a long series of hackathons.

Professors as mentors

Lectures are a medieval tradition (seriously!). That's why we don't have any typical lecture halls on campus. At CODE, professors take on the role of mentors and learning companions. You moderate interactive learning formats and promote active learning and the practical application of knowledge. They do not see it as their job to simply pass on knowledge but rather want to inspire students, awaken their creativity, support them in working through problems and, if necessary, help them with their specialist knowledge and expertise.
